not all tulips are from amsterdam

by | May 1, 2024

As the days are getting longer and spring approaches, let’s take a closer look at the journey of one of our favourite flowers.
Originating in Persia in the 10th Century, tulips quickly gained popularity eventually joining the craze for global oddities brought about by the spice trade from the West Indies.

The bulb craze grew and grew to the extent that, in the 17th Century, entire houses could be exchanged in France for a single bulb!

Whilst our Dutch friends still very much monopolise the tulip market tulips are now successfully grown around the world, our own beautiful tulips (which many of you will have enjoyed) come from our friends Smith & Munson.

This 5th generation Lincolnshire flower farm uses the latest hydroponic growing techniques to produce a stunning selection of single, double, frilly and parrot tulips whilst maintaining a service that is beautifully old school and personal.

We love to visit the family when we can to chat about new varieties and feed off their passion for the product. There is no better sense of satisfaction than selling a bunch of seasonal blooms that were grown with love , picked and packed the day before. We regularly receive feedback that Smith & Munson tulips are still going strong two weeks later!
